Melitodes Oil
From Marissa Zappas
Melitodes (ΜΕΛΙΤΗΔΕΣ) takes its name from Persephone’s secret epithet: “the honeyed one.” A nickname passed down through ancient hymns, it evokes the goddess suspended between light and shadow, sweetness and the underworld. Honey has always belonged to her, part of the portal and part of the lure.
Marissa first encountered thyme-infused honey in a small coastal and mountainous village where her grandparents were born, just above the supposed entrance to Hades and outside of Gytheio, in the Peloponnese region of Greece. There, the air still hums with wild thyme and the devotional labor of bees. The honey is herbal, softly incandescent, with a dry, bittersweet taste.
“I have inherited a wound and a sweetness and I cannot tell the difference.”Â
